A Mk7 Golf R transformed by PSDesigns.

Some cars are modified to stand out. Others are built with a clear vision from the very beginning.

Our 2015 Mk7 Volkswagen Golf R started life in the factory’s iconic Lapiz Blue, but after a couple of years of developing products and performance upgrades, we decided it was time for a complete transformation.

The result is something very different.

Finished in Oak Green Metallic (L94E) and sitting on CPR Forged PS01 wheels, this Golf R combines classic Volkswagen heritage with modern performance and PSDesigns engineering.

And underneath the styling, it has the performance to match.

From Lapiz Blue to Oak Green

Lapiz Blue is arguably the signature colour of the Mk7 Golf R. It’s instantly recognisable and suits the car extremely well.

But we wanted our development car to be different, We worked with Body Repair Bristol to make this transformation and couldn’t be happier with the results.

The decision to repaint the Golf in Oak Green Metallic was inspired by Volkswagen’s heritage and the colour’s association with some of the company’s most iconic performance and enthusiast cars, a friend had a mk2 big bumper GTi 16v when I was in school, a car today that has become a classic formed a large part of the inspiration for this build.

Moving from Lapiz Blue to Oak Green completely changed the character of the car.

The darker green gives the Golf a more understated and premium appearance, while the contrast with the polished and brushed gold CPR Forged wheels gives it a much more distinctive presence.

It almost looks like Volkswagen could have built it this way from the factory, and charged a premium for doing so!

CPR Forged PS01 – the wheel choice.

The next major part of the transformation was the wheels.

We chose the CPR-PS01 Forged 6061-T6 Alloy Wheel, finished in a 19×9 ET35 specification.

The PS01 was designed around the idea that a performance wheel needs to do more than simply look good.

Manufactured from 6061-T6 aluminium, the PS01 is a genuine forged wheel, providing high strength and rigidity while helping to reduce unsprung mass.

The technical, motorsport-inspired design works particularly well on the Mk7 Golf R. The relatively intricate spoke structure gives the car a much more purposeful appearance without making the design look overly complicated.

The wider 9-inch wheel and ET35 offset also give the Golf the stance we were looking for.

The right stance.

The Golf runs BC Racing coilovers, with approximately 10mm of drop at the front and 15mm at the rear.

The aim wasn’t to create an unusable show car.

Instead, we wanted to achieve the right relationship between the bodywork, arches and wheels while retaining the practicality that makes the Golf R such a good everyday performance car.

The combination of the 19×9 PS01s and the lowered suspension completely changes the proportions of the car.

It sits lower, wider and more aggressively, but still looks like a Golf R rather than a car that has been modified simply for the sake of it.

PSDesigns Stage 2+ Performance Package

The biggest difference between this Golf R and a standard car isn’t something you can see from the outside.

Under the bonnet, the car runs the PSDesigns Stage 2+ Performance Package for the Volkswagen Golf R Mk7/7.5.

This is a package we developed specifically to take the Mk7 Golf R beyond conventional Stage 2 performance while retaining the factory catalytic converter.

The hardware package includes a Littco L380XL turbo and actuator, Wagner intercooler, RAMAIR performance intake, turbo elbow and intake pipe upgrades, RS3 coil packs and NGK Racing heat range 9 spark plugs.

The car also benefits from the individual components available through the PSDesigns range, including the RAMAIR Performance Intake System and PSD Turbo Inlet Elbow.

With the supporting calibration, the PSDesigns Stage 2+ package is capable of 420+ bhp, while retaining OEM-style drivability and the factory catalytic converter.

This is exactly the type of performance upgrade we wanted for our own development car — significant power gains without turning the Golf into something impractical for the road.

A development car with a purpose

This Golf R isn’t just a showpiece.

It is one of our PSDesigns development cars, giving us a platform to test products, evaluate performance upgrades and develop solutions that can eventually be offered to customers.

That means the car gets driven.

It gets tested.

And it gets used in the real world.

That’s important to us because we don’t believe products should simply look good in photographs or on a product page. They need to work properly when fitted to a car and used as intended.

The Golf R gives us the perfect platform for that.

Why the Mk7 Golf R?

The Mk7 Golf R is one of the best all-round performance platforms Volkswagen has produced.

You get the practicality of a Golf, the traction of Volkswagen’s 4MOTION system and a highly tuneable EA888 engine, all wrapped in a relatively understated package.

That makes it an ideal development vehicle for PSDesigns.

The car can be driven to shows, used on the road, tested hard and continually developed without losing the characteristics that make the Golf R such a great platform.

The finished combination

The transformation from Lapiz Blue to Oak Green Metallic has completely changed the personality of the car.

The Oak Green paint gives it a classic Volkswagen feel.

The CPR Forged PS01s give it a modern motorsport-inspired edge.

The suspension gives it the stance.

And the PSDesigns Stage 2+ package gives it the performance to back everything up.

The result is a Golf R that is considerably more individual than the car that originally left the factory, while still retaining the practicality and usability of the Mk7 platform.
